Music and the Fictive Dream
The movie I chose for the music and fictive dream is Hairspray, it is an American musical, based on the 1988 John Waters' cult classic. It tells a story of main character, Tracy Turnblad, a girl with big hair and an even bigger hear, who has only one dream; which is to be the lead singer. But there is only one problem, she doesn't fit in the description of being the lead singer, she was "different". But in the end, Tracy wins everyone over with her personality and talent, showing everyone that there is more to you than just looks. She grew a following and fans. Hairspray highlighted so much diversity from cultures to body types to "popular clicks" ect.
Hairspray was one of those movies you remember watching for the first time and wish you can watch again. It was first released in 2007, and quickly became popular because of the musical.
The song "Big, Blond, and Beautiful" is performed by the character, "motormouth" - Queen Latifah.
The song is about being confident in who you are. Queen Latifah played a big role in the movie and performer.
I must say, as a lover of the original Hairspray movie but someone who has never seen the remake, I can definitely relate to your enthusiasm for the 2007 version. Hairspray, in its original form, was indeed a classic that left a lasting impression on its viewers. It's heartwarming to see how the story of Tracy Turnblad, a girl who defied societal norms and stereotypes, resonated with so many people.
ReplyDeleteQueen Latifah's performance as "motormouth" in the film is something I've heard a lot about, and I've always admired her talent and charisma. "Big, Blond, and Beautiful" is a fantastic song that carries a powerful message of self-confidence and embracing one's uniqueness. It's wonderful to know that Queen Latifah played a pivotal role in delivering this message through her performance.
As a fan of Queen Latifah myself, I can only imagine how her presence in the remake must have added a special touch to the movie. Her versatility as an artist and her ability to portray strong, inspiring characters are truly remarkable.
Your description of the movie's focus on diversity, body positivity, and breaking down social cliques is very intriguing. It seems like Hairspray, both in its original and remake forms, has managed to capture the essence of inclusivity and acceptance, which are values that resonate strongly with many of us.
Now, after reading your blog, I'm even more curious to watch the remake and witness Queen Latifah's performance in all its glory. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and reminding me of the magic that Hairspray brings to the screen. It's a testament to the enduring appeal of this beloved musical.
