Final Project - Thesis Statement

Image
How does music serve society?  When you look up, how does music serve society, the first thing you find is, at the core of our everyday experience with music, we use it to relax, express ourselves, come to terms with our emotions, and generally improve our well-being. I cannot agree more.  In my previous blog post in 'take a musical trip' about the Alaska Native Dancers, music to them is about telling powerful and meaningful stories about subsistence harvesting and the way of living in Rural Alaska. The Alaska Native people work hard to create handmade drums in order to create music. The handmade drums are made differently depending on the culture and traditions. However, it is usually the same aspects of banging on the drum and singing in the native language.  Alaska Native Music serves society a way of expressing each culture, community, and family. In our inupiaq music culture I know there is a lot of family dances that are passed down from generations to generat...

Music and the Fictive Dream

Image
Background/History The movie I chose for the music and fictive dream is  Hairspray, it is an American musical, based on the 1988 John Waters' cult classic. It tells a story of main character, Tracy Turnblad, a girl with big hair and an even bigger hear, who has only one dream; which is to be the lead singer. But there is only one problem, she doesn't fit in the description of being the lead singer, she was "different". But in the end, Tracy wins everyone over with her personality and talent, showing everyone that there is more to you than just looks. She grew a following and fans. Hairspray highlighted so much diversity from cultures to body types to "popular clicks" ect.  Hairspray was one of those movies you remember watching for the first time and wish you can watch again. It was first released in 2007, and quickly became popular because of the musical.  The song "Big, Blond, and Beautiful" is performed by the character, "motormouth" ...

Role of the Performers

Robyn Rihanna Fenty was born February 20, 1988, she is a Barbadian singer, songwriter, businesswoman, and actress. Rihanna is the second-best-selling female music artist of all time and the highest-certified female artist.  Although, Rihanna is known for her talent in writing her own music but she also performs/record music written by other songwriters such as: "Roll It Gal" 2007 -  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VlvuLXDRuCc  "Disturbia" 2008 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E1mU6h4Xdxc "Only Girl in the World" 2010 -  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pa14VNsdSYM All songs have been huge hits! There are many more songs that Rihanna performed that she didn't write that has hugely impact the world by the talent of the song writer and the talent of the performance.  We need Rihanna as an artist because she has positively influenced many women with her great music and success in the business world. Rihanna started her musical career at the age of 15 per...

Take A Musical Trip - Music of the Inupiaq Language - Northwest Alaska

Image
Music of the Inupiaq Language and Music - Northwest Alaska  The music created by the Alaska Native people in Northwest Alaska is a combination of the inupiaq language and the beat of traditional drums. Also known as eskimo dancing. The eskimo dancing is a traditional inuit style dancing form usually performed to songs in the Native language, with dances choreographed for specific songs. The Alaska Native People use the music to tell stories of subsistence harvesting, showing the strength of the people, and often times some song/dances belong to a family.  The picture below is the native drums made with stretched seal skin and wooden frame. The music is made by hitting the drums and singing in the native language.  The two different types of musical selection I chose to describe eskimo dance music is repetitive patterns and tempo. The drum beat of eskimo dance music is created by repetitive patterns, the tempo stays the same and then when the song is finished they si...

History of Music Players

Image
The phonograph, also known as record player, was invented in 1877 by Thomas Edison. Instead of attending a live concert to listen to music, it was now possible to listen to music at home. The phonograph was posted on the market in 1896.  An Italian inventor named, Guglielmo Marconi, first developed the idea of a radio, or wireless telegraph, in the 1890s. His ideas took shape in 1895 when he sent a wireless Morse Code message to a source more than a kilometer away.  The  cassette tape players were invented and released by Phillips in 1963. The cassette player was smaller and had buttons to control things like start/stop, fast forward, etc. It offered music in a smaller and more portable format than the transistor radio. They enabled the first mix tapes.  All of the music players started getting smaller and smaller over the years.  Fast forward to the first original ipod, introduced on October 23, 2001, was the first MP3 player to pack a mind-blowing, 1,000...

Music Analysis #2

Image
Focus & Study Music "Effective Alpha Waves" that improve concentration and focus: Relaxing studying music, focus boost.  This is actually a ton of non-lyrical and no word study music put into a podcast. As a mom of four kids, I have a loud house. My husband takes care of our kids while I study or I do a lot of my studying after the kids bedtime. This podcast has help improve productivity in studying and in the workplace. The reason I chose this podcast instead of an actual song or genre is because I haven't been spending as much time listening to music as I usually do. However, I have been leaning to this podcast and I have been noticing a drastic positive change in my studying time and productivity, so I hope it helps you!  Melody - The melody is very soft and elegant.  Relaxed and a little bit of moodiness. There is something in the melody that keeps you engaged with concentration, I believe it is the combination of the melodies with the soft transitions....

Music Analysis #1

Image
My favorite type of genre of music is Gospel and Pop.  My favorite artist is Lauren Daigle, I love her music, the first time I listened to one of her songs was when I was going through a rough time. I connected with the lyrics and melodies instantly.  The song that I come back to all the time is "Hold On To Me"   Hold On To Me  this song was released in February 25, 2021.  The melody in Lauren's song "Hold On To Me" is desperate but also hopeful all into one. The three different elements in this song that make it enjoyable are a soft combination of texture, rhythm, and form.  One thing that I admire most about Lauren Daigle is she writes and sings all of her songs and they always have an inspiring story behind each song she writes.  Sources:  "Lauren Daigle Returns With New Song, Hold On To Me."
